As Christians, at Tansley United Church we share this meal on the first Sunday of each month (and some special occasions). The broken bread and poured juice have become symbols to remind us of the crucified and risen Christ. When we receive the bread and cup we share in community with God’s people throughout the ages and around the world.
ALL ARE INVITED TO THE TABLE
In the United Church of Canada all people are welcome to celebrate this Sacrament. We practise open communion where everyone, including the smallest children, is welcome at God’s table. After the invitation has been spoken, all who are able come to the front of the church and receive communion from the servers. If you are unable to come forward to receive communion a server will come to you in your seat.
Communion is served by intinction. Each person takes a cube of bread and then dips it into the cup of juice and eats the juice-soaked bread. Do not feel rushed; take your time, as this is a sacred moment in worship. An appropriate response upon receiving the elements is Amen. We also have a gluten free tray from which people with wheat allergies can take a cracker and cup of juice.
ANNOINTING OF OIL AND PRAYERS
Anointing of oil and personal prayers are available at the Prayer Wall at the back of the Sanctuary during Communion.
The practice of anointing with oil has been used in Christianity since it earliest days as reflected in this passage from the New Testament, is any sick among you? Let them call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise them up; and if they have committed sins, they shall be forgiven. James 5: 14-15
