Regular Sunday Service Job Duties

Worship Coordinator

Arrive at 9:30 am. Wear your name tag.

Place at least four offering plates (more may be needed on Sundays with larger attendance)  on the round table at the back of the Sanctuary.  These may already be there, or can be found under the Communion table, or in the outer office.

Check that four blue friendship pads are each equipped with four friendship sign-in pages. The pads will be found in the top left drawer of the counter in the outer church office. Photocopy more sign-in pages if necessary. Make sure there are enough PAR cards, envelopes and prayer requests in each folder.  Place these friendship pads with the offering plates.

Check the Volunteer list on hall bulletin board to know who is expected.  Make sure that the Volunteers know what they are supposed to be doing, if they are new to the position.  If someone is missing, try to find a replacement or speak to a Worship Committee member.

The bulletins and any inserts will be found on the counter in the outer office. Put the bulletins on the hall ledge for the ushers. Place any inserts with the bulletins so the ushers can insert them when they hand out the bulletins.

Turn on all cross lights.

Place a glass of fresh water on the pulpit shelf and make sure tissues, paper and pen are all available as well.

Make sure the Christ Candle, Peace Candle and lighter are on the small table beside the Communion table. Find the acolyte. (The acolyte is kept in the cupboards under the pamphlet shelves in the front hall.)

Invite a child (sometimes 2 children like to work together) to be the candle lighter(s). Give their name to the Announcer. Give the acolyte (unlit) to the children.

During the reading of the announcements, when the child’s name is mentioned by the Announcer, send the child up to the Chancel (front of the Church) holding the acolyte. Rev. Helen will light the acolyte when the child arrives.

When the child returns to the back of the church, return the acolyte to the cupboard.

At the end of the service, turn off the cross lights, tidy the sanctuary and check the chair backs have no garbage and all pockets contain an informational pamphlet.  Remove any inserts from the bulletins (even those in the recycle bin) and put them back on the counter in the outer office.

On Communion Sunday let Kids` Program know when to come up to Sanctuary for Communion.

Reader/Announcer

The church office will e-mail the scripture reading to you by the Friday before you read.

At home, practice reading it out loud several times.  Try to speak slowly and be sure to enunciate the first and last letter of each word. If people can’t hear properly, it’s usually because the reading was too fast. Ask the Minister if you are unsure of any pronunciations.

On Sunday, arrive as close as possible to 9:30 am. Check in with the Worship Coordinator and the Minister to confirm you have arrived.

Wear your name tag.

In the outer church office pick up the rose-coloured folder (contains the daily announcements and the scripture). Review the announcement page all the way to the bottom.  Read through the script carefully so you know which parts not to read out loud.  Take a pen with you as some people may come up and ask you to make an announcement for them before the service starts. Wait in the Narthex area (back of the Sanctuary) to be ready to go up with the Minister to the Chancel (front of the church).

Allow no more than 2 extra people to make announcements. Make sure those with announcements sit close to front.

At 10:00 am walk with the Worship Leader to the Chancel. Begin the announcements at the pulpit.

A child will come up to light the Christ Candle and Peace Candle during this time.  When reading the announcements, make sure to wait until after the child lights the candles before reading the last paragraph of the announcement script.

After doing the announcements, sit at the front to be able to arrive at the pulpit in a timely fashion to read scripture.  If you are reading more than one passage, and there is a break for music/hymn etc., sit beside the Worship Leader between the selections.

Greeters

Arrive as close as possible to 9:30.

Check in with the Worship Coordinator so they know you have arrived.

Wear your name tag.

Stand at the front door area by the counter.  Warmly greet people by name (if possible).  Handshakes, hugs, kind words are all acceptable as they arrive, BUT, let the person being greeted indicate how they want to be greeted.

Help with heavy doors (activate the open door button for those with mobility challenges).

Answer any questions asked (e.g. location of washrooms, Kids’ Program space, mailboxes, name tags) OR direct worshippers to someone with such knowledge.

Please do not talk loudly after the service starts.

Remain at back to help late-comers until the singing of the second hymn.

When the offering is announced, help the Ushers by covering the outside aisles, starting at the front of the Sanctuary.  You will take one offering plate and be sending it down alternate rows from those that the Usher is handing out, one of you on each side.  You will move from the front to the back of the Sanctuary.

Ushers

Arrive as close as possible to 9:30.

Check in with the Worship Coordinator so they know you have arrived.

Wear your name tag.

Stand at the end of the hall entrance to the Sanctuary.  Warmly greet people by name (if possible) as you offer bulletins. If there are inserts to go in the bulletins, please add them to the bulletins.

Be prepared to answer questions, OR direct worshippers to someone with such knowledge.

Please talk softly after the service starts as this can be heard in the Sanctuary.

Remain at back to help late-comers until the singing of the second hymn.

During A Time for Learning, pass out the friendship pads, two to each side starting at front and middle of the Sanctuary.

When the offering is announced, find your Usher partner and get the offering plates.  Pass the offering plates beginning at centre aisle front, one of you on each side. The Greeters will cover the outside aisles.  You will each take one offering plate and send them down alternate rows from the one that the Greeter is handing.  You will move from the front to the back of the Sanctuary. One of the Ushers should offer a plate to the sound booth people and anyone sitting at the back of the Sanctuary.

When the offering is complete, wait at the back of the central aisle with the other Usher.  When the Offertory Hymn starts, carry the offering plates to the front and stop at the bottom of the stairs. The person on the right will receive the choir’s offering and the children’s offering.  The Minister will bless the offering, then you will take the offering back to the outer office for the counters to process.

It is preferable for the Ushers to sit visibly near the back of the church during the service so that the worshippers who may require assistance an find the Usher (i.e. illness, directions to washroom, etc.) and so you can see who may need assistance.
